The impact of our reactions

“For some people, their reaction to the situation can make them feel even worse,” says Dr Scoda.

“If you’ve been dumped by someone, having an extreme reaction, like sending a thousand abusive emails to the person who ended the relationship, might leave you feeling embarrassed or ashamed when you look back on it.”

Other damaging knock-on behaviours include splurging on a shopping spree after you open a shock bill, overeating when you’re bummed about weight gain, or chickening out of applying for a great job because you botched a previous interview.

Such behaviours could culminate in depression, anger, relationship breakdowns or career problems.
